The three-coin method is the most common way to cast an I Ching hexagram today. This guide explains each line, changing lines, and the relating hexagram—then you can cast online free at AskOracle.
Three identical coins and one clear question. Write the question down before you cast. The I Ching works best when you are sincere and specific—not vague worry, but a real decision or situation.
Shake three coins and toss them once per line, from bottom to top (line 1 first, line 6 last). For each coin: heads (usually the side with a number) = 3, tails = 2. Add the three values.
| Sum | Line | Name |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | — — (yin) | Old yin · changing |
| 7 | ——— (yang) | Young yang · stable |
| 8 | — — (yin) | Young yin · stable |
| 9 | ——— (yang) | Old yang · changing |
Stack the six lines: the first cast is the bottom of the hexagram, the sixth is the top. You now have your primary hexagram (本卦).
Any line that totaled 6 or 9 is a changing line. Flip only those lines—yin becomes yang, yang becomes yin—to build the relating hexagram (之卦). The relating hexagram often describes where the situation is heading.
Read the line texts (爻辞) for each changing line in the primary hexagram first; they are usually the most specific guidance for your question.
Each hexagram has an upper trigram (lines 4–6) and lower trigram (lines 1–3): Heaven, Earth, Thunder, Water, Mountain, Wind, Fire, Lake. The hexagram judgment (卦辞) sets the overall theme; trigrams add context about inner vs outer dynamics.
Tarot emphasizes archetypal images on cards; the Book of Changes emphasizes patterns of change over time. Neither replaces your judgment—they offer language for reflection. AskOracle automates casting and offers AI interpretation in modern English while keeping classical line values.
Popular uses include I Ching love reading (clarity in relationships), I Ching career decisions (timing a move or negotiation), and personal crossroads. One question per casting; if the answer feels unclear, refine the question and cast again another day rather than repeatedly asking the same thing.
